detectives inc don macgregorFrom a historical perspective Detectives Inc. is a true classic of the genre and the medium. Don McGregor wrote one of the original graphic novels that was written and marketed exclusively for the Direct Market. Detectives Inc. collects A Remembrance of Threatening Green which was originally published in 1980 and A Terror Of Dying Dreams which was originally published in 1985. The story had been worked on by McGregor since 1969 with photocopied versions appearing as early as the 70′s, so when we talk of graphic novels these are O.G. graphic novels.

So you’ve been reading crime comics and graphic novels for a few years now and toss around names like Azzarello and Brubaker; Aaron and Lapham. You’ve got copies of Stray Bullets bagged and boarded and you know the entire run of 100 Bullets like your life depended on it. Criminal and Scalped – you know it.

I bet you think you’ve got a pretty good idea of what makes one tick right? Well you ain’t seen nothing yet. This is crime comics story telling from a different era. Modern stories sometimes feel as if they are afraid to deal with emotion and intimacy. To dig deep down and get into the guts of a story. And if they do it’s done with a heavy dose of irony. McGregor doesn’t do that, he plays it straight. Detectives Inc. is a crime story with its heart worn openly on its sleeve.

McGregor has been accused of prose that runs this side of purple. I don’t think that’s the case though. It’s a prose style that is perhaps more lush then the stripped down machinations of other comics (crime or otherwise) but dense writing must also too have a place in the form and McGregor has moments where he just makes the words sing.

The art in the second books is a little hit and miss in spots and is damn near virtuosic in places in the first book.

At its best Detectives Inc. really shows us some of the other possibilities that are out there for the crime comics form. In these moments it is sophisticated comics telling of the highest order. Always interesting, sometimes great and certainly worth your time you should really check out this blast from the past.

The book itself offers the most bang for the buck I’ve seen in a hardcover graphic novel in a long time. It’s got scripts, articles and introductions. McGregor has never been anything less than DIY and the book includes stills from the movie version that McGregor wrote, directed and filmed in the 80′s. The movie has been shown at comic conventions but to date has never been released commercially. Below is a trailer for the film.
