Today is my fourth birthday as an online reviewer. On July 31st 2006 my first online review was published. I started out as a mystery/crime reviewer on a site that mainly covered SF/F. I think this is worth noting up front. It helps to explain some of my older reviews.
To date I’ve written about many hundreds of books and the sum total of what I’ve learned is that I don’t have the slightest idea what I’m doing. That I’m a much better reader then a reviewer. That I struggle with every review I write. That’s it.
For what it’s worth I always try to do my best though.
I thought about a longer post with my thoughts on reviewing but that feels like something I’m not qualified to speak on and above that, something of limited interest and value. I’d rather read another book and try to write about it.
What I am going to do to celebrate this day is start reprinting excerpts from my BSC reviews, one a day, starting with the earliest ones first. With the various name changes that BSC has gone through to accommodate its growth the search rank for some of that old stuff was lost. By re-posting part of the reviews here at Spinetingler I can not only set up a kind of archive but also give some new and ongoing exposure to those books and authors. Plus, some of that stuff has got to be good for a laugh or two.
These excerpts will start tomorrow, August 1st.
