IN FOR QUESTIONING

By Sandra Ruttan

SPINETINGLER has been operating for two years now, and one of the byproducts of the e-zine is that we’re constantly sent notices about new books being released, invitations to interview authors, touring information…

We’re a quarterly e-zine so the information would be stale by the time it was put in print, even if we did include announcements. Every time I opened one of these e-mails I found myself asking, What do they want me to do with this?

Meanwhile, I’d noticed something. A lot of the mainstream publishing industry news sources weren’t talking about the authors I was hearing a lot of buzz about. Reader discussion groups were filled with praise for Troy Cook’s 47 Rules for Highly Effective Bankrobbers and Robert Fate’s Baby Shark.

Small press authors oozing with talent, but largely overlooked.

That’s when I realized that a lot of the small press news isn’t getting reported. In the scheme of what’s newsworthy, I suppose six-figure deals and multi-book contracts and the various missteps of bestselling authors draw a guaranteed audience, and that’s fine. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot happening in the business that never gets reported on.

I mentioned my thoughts to a few friends. We agreed that this was a corner of the market that didn’t get much coverage, and we decided to do something about it.

In For Questioning is a blog that has a focus on small press news, new authors, contest, underground projects… We aren’t saying we won’t talk about big presses or bestselling authors sometimes. We’re only saying that our primary focus is on sharing information with readers about new authors, new presses and new ventures that they might otherwise not hear about.

We want small presses to e-mail us with their announcements. We want to hear about underground anthologies, new releases from e-zines.

We aren’t promising to post everything we receive. We are pledging to keep our eye open for interesting news that might be of interest.
