On December 21, 2006, Flashing in the Gutters was shut down by
its creator Tribe. This was the result of some unpleasant events
that occurred which will not be discussed here.
Instead I feel we should raise a glass and toast the significant contribution
that Tribe and his site made to the community. Flashing in the Gutters
had a unique distinction of being a giving a large number of people
a first credit, a place where a new author could find their work along
side known and respected authors.
Tribe was also very dedicated to the site and stories submitted were
always posted quickly. His hard work was the cornerstone of what made
site what it was.
A number of sites devoted to flash fiction have appeared more recently
and I think this is a further tribute to Tribe for giving very short
fiction an increased respectability.
Often we still get submissions where the bio includes Flashing in the
Gutters as a credit. This showed the importance that the site had achieved
in such a short period of time.
While I was disappointed to see it go, I’m sure I speak for many
others when I say thanks for giving the writing community such an important
and respected venue.
